ACT IScene 1The Faerie Queen and her elven knights are returning home after making a sacrifice
to the Dark Lord. The Queen spies Tam Lin and decides to make him her own. |
Scene 2
Lady Roxbrugh suspects foul play in the disappearance of her grandson Thomas. Sterling, her
right-hand man,
is greatly offended. |
Scene 3
Seven years later. Janet's lady-in-waiting Margaret is all aflutter over the prospect
of seeing Lord Aberdeen. Janet has no use for men or marriage. |
Scene 4Lord Dunbar and Lord Aberdeen discuss the legend of the ghostly young Tam Lin and the prospect of
marriage between Aberdeen and Janet. Then Dunbar announces the betrothal - to Janet's surprise and horror.

Scene 5Even after seven years the Faerie Queen is still enamoured of Tam Lin, but her elven
knights are getting fed up.
|
Scene 6Janet refuses to have anything with Aberdeen. Dunbar gives Aberdeen a book with advice
on dealing with an "unruly wyfe."
|
Scene 7Janet vows to run away to Carterhaugh to protest her arranged marriage.
|
Scene 8Lady Roxbrugh is furious that Dunbar has annexed the forest of Carterhaugh. She vows
to fight back. Sterling is supportive, but reminds her that Aberdeen is now
watching over Dunbar's affairs.

Scene 9Janet meets Tam Lin and opts to give him her maidenhead.
|
Scene 10Margaret masquerades as Janet and ends up in bed with Aberdeen.
|
Scene 11Tam Lin urges Janet to leave Carterhaugh or be caught by the Faerie Queen.
The elven knights learn of Tam Lin's romance and remind Tam Lin that the
Faerie Queen will make a sacrifice to the Dark Lord on Halloween.

Scene 12Janet returns home and learns what Margaret has been up to, although Aberdeen is
still clueless.
|
ACT IIScene 1Aberdeen asks Margaret for advice on how to deal with Janet's
strange behavior - sweet at night, nasty during the day.
|
Scene 2
Sterling shows up at Dunbar castle as an emissary
from Lady Roxbrugh. But he has communication troubles with the soldiers.

Scene 3
Aberdeen has a theory - he believes that the true
Janet is switching places with a "changeling." |
Scene 4
Sterling offers to make a deal with Aberdeen -
surrender Dunbar castle or face destruction by trebuchet. |
Scene 5
Janet fails to
turn up on the autumn equinox - the elven knights plan
to bring her back to Carterhaugh on Halloween. |
ACT IIIScene 1
Two weeks later. Thanks to torrential rains, the
Roxbrughs' plan to destroy Dunbar castle with their trebuchet has been
thwarted. Meanwhile both Janet and Margaret have come down with the same
malady - but it's more than a case of sour stomach. |
Scene 2
Dunbar and his army have arrived to drive the
Roxbrughs' away. They make plans for the trebuchet. |
Scene 3
Just when Lord Dunbar has reconciled himself to
Janet's pregnancy, Janet declares that the father of her baby is Tam
Lin. |
ACT IVScene 1
Halloween has arrived. The elves are impatient for
Halloween to begin at sunset so they can go and bring Janet to Tam
Lin. |
Scene 2
Janet is off to see Tam Lin in spite of impending
war, and her impending marriage to Aberdeen. |
Scene 3
Sterling plans to improve his standing with Lady
Roxbrugh by capturing Aberdeen in Carterhaugh. |
Scene 4
The elven lords, on their way to fetch Janet,
encounter Aberdeen, Margaret and Janet. Janet runs off during the battle
between elves and mortals. |
Scene 5
Tam Lin advises Janet on how to win him away from
the Faerie Queen. |
Scene 6
Janet wins Tam Lin away from the Faerie Queen. But
then Sterling takes Janet as his hostage. |
ACT VScene 1
Lady Roxbrugh recognizes her grandson Thomas. They
all live happily ever after. |
Scene 2
The Queen of the Faeries mourns the loss of Tam Lin... but becomes re-acquainted
with her harem. |
